Some of us, with good motivation, especially establish assisted recitation groups with their own reputations. When performing the assisted recitation, we think: “I hope the dying will have auspicious signs to increase my confidence and boost my reputation.  Not only will this show my assisted recitation experience, but it can benefit the dying members’ families.”  However, this is not necessary.

       What is the key to assisted recitation?  Recite sincerely, devotedly, and exclusively.  Of course, we can give the dying comforting advice.  If they have good roots, merits, and karma, and can accept Amitabha’s vows, then they will naturally have good appearances or at least die peacefully when the time comes.  Even if not, sincere, devoted, and exclusive recitation will ensure that they attain inconceivable benefits.

       Therefore, we should not focus on auspicious signs but those fundamental qualities of nianfo.  Leave everything else to Amitabha, and his power will naturally play an inconceivable role.
