How Wonderful it is to Recite Amitabha's Name
Reciting Amitabha's name is wonderful precisely because it is useless. It cannot be eaten, worn or spent as money. Ah, name-recitation has no material worldly function -- how wonderful!
From a worldly perspective, we can not claim that name-recitation is of any practical use. It is completely useless. Doesn't that illustrate that name recitation surpasses every worldly thing?
The things of this world belong to and are controlled by the world; and as such will fall and perish with it. But name-recitation is not like this.
Computers, desks, earth, sky, sunshine, air, wind, water, trees and grasses -- everything has its own use.
Name-recitation has none, yet the aggregation of all earthly things cannot replace or surpass the result of name-recitation.
Amitabha's name will deliver us to the Pure Land, because it is not defiled by anything of this world. If it could be taken as food or drink, it would become an earthly object. Then how would it be honorable and precious at all?
