How to Cultivate Strong Mind Power

Mind power is the most resilient, greatest, and most miraculous force within us. It is the driving power behind all human endeavors. When mind power is abundant, things succeed easily; when mind power runs low, nothing gets done.

Throughout history, every great figure who accomplished extraordinary feats did so through extraordinary mind power. Consider Dharmakara Bodhisattva: his immense mind power brought forth the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, saving all sentient beings through infinite light. It is the ultimate manifestation of mind power in the universe.

Most people, however, often feel that their mind power is lacking. When our inner strength runs low, we give up halfway, abandoning even our noble ideals and valuable opportunities.

How, then, do we cultivate mind power? Here are three key practices.

1. Stop Wasting Your Energy

While the ultimate potential of mind power is boundless, our daily supply of mental energy is finite. Your first priority is to protect this precious resource and stop draining it on trivial matters.

Unfortunately, most of us drain our mental energy daily through resentment, fear, anxiety, and overthinking. Every surge of negative emotion takes a massive bite out of your energy tank. Before long, you have nothing left for what truly matters.

How do we break free from negative emotions? Have deep faith in the law of karma (cause and effect).

Understand that your actions shape your future. When you accept life as it comes, you stop fighting reality. You avoid getting carried away in good times and stay calm in adversity. Simply reaching this state puts you far ahead of most people.

Denying cause and effect leads to reckless action. We fall into the trap of thinking our personal effort can master all things, piling on unnecessary schemes that only do harm.

Consider lighting a fire in a stove: adding more wood doesn't guarantee a bigger fire. If you stuff the stove full, you choke the airflow, wasting wood while getting little heat. Leave enough open space for air to circulate, and a few logs will create a roaring fire.

Trusting karma is like leaving that open space. It keeps the mind unburdened and free from reckless impulses. You allow things to unfold naturally according to their true nature, stepping in only at the opportune moment—saving immense effort while achieving the best result.

When you hit rock bottom, lie low. Stop forcing outcomes, observe quietly, and adapt to the momentum.

Imagine a sparrow trapped in a cage. If it panics and smashes against the bars, it ends up exhausted and bleeding. It is better for it to stay completely still and conserve its strength, waiting for the cage door to open so it can fly free.

2. Cultivate Peace and Goodwill

Mind power can be nurtured. The secret? Keep your mind calm.

The mind has an extraordinary and wondrous nature. When you allow it to settle in peace, it naturally generates power. A short rest restores it rapidly—much like a tree that grows effortlessly as long as its roots remain undisturbed. Yet, we keep our minds constantly anxious and restless, driving them day and night without rest, draining our energy and hindering growth.

Additionally, make a habit of doing good and helping others. The more goodness you practice, the stronger your positive mind power grows. You draw like-minded people to you, creating a snowball effect of wholesome strength.

3. Tap Into a Higher Power

Think of it like business: if you run short on capital, you secure a loan from the bank. When your mind power runs low, you can draw upon the mind power of the sages, who are always generous in sharing it. The difference? A financial loan must be repaid; mind power is a pure gift. Believers in God draw upon God’s power; Buddhists draw upon the Buddha’s power.

As practitioners of reciting Amitabha’s name (Nianfo), once we entrust our lives completely to the Buddha, we gain unlimited access to an inexhaustible, pristine source of ultimate mind power—the pure, inexhaustible power of the Dharma Realm.

When it comes to spreading the Dharma and benefiting others, we ordinary beings have no power to do so on our own. We simply rely on the Buddha's power. It saves us from so much panic and frees us from so many reckless mistakes.
