Can a single name embody everything we need for liberation—all Buddhas, all teachings, all practices, and all merit?

       Yes. This is exactly what Shakyamuni Buddha declared in the “Sutra in Which the Buddha Speaks of the Fundamental Secret Mantra of Amitabha Buddha”:

       The name of Amitabha Buddha holds boundless, inconceivable, profound, and supreme merit.

       But why? What makes this name so extraordinary?

       The Buddha answered this himself:

A-mi-tuo [Amitabha] embodies all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Sravakas, and Arhats
of the three ages—past, present, and future—and of the ten directions;
it also includes all sutras, dhāraṇīs, mantras, and the innumerable Dharma practices.
That is why Amitabha’s name is called the true Mahayana Dharma, the most supreme and pure wondrous practice, and the foremost and exalted dhāraṇī.

       If everything is already complete within the Name, what could possibly be lacking when we recite “Namo Amituofo”?

       The sutra goes on to describe what happens when someone hears of these inconceivable merits and responds with sincere faith:

Shariputra! If sentient beings, upon hearing the inconceivable merits of Amitabha Buddha,
rejoice with uplifted hearts, recite his name with sincerity,
and abide in deep faith and steadfastness, they will experience unmatched happiness in this very life.
Poverty may give way to abundance. Illness may be relieved. A short life may be extended. Enemies may become friends. They may be blessed with children and prosperity. They may enjoy peace in body and mind, with all their wishes fulfilled. Such merit is beyond measure.

       Śākyamuni Buddha praised the merits and virtues of Amitabha Buddha’s Name using every wholesome and exalted expression known in our Saha world—describing it as boundless, inconceivable, supreme, and beyond measure. This shows that Amitabha Buddha’s Name is truly extraordinary and without equal.

       The real purpose of Amitabha’s vow is to lead us all to rebirth in the Pure Land, where we will attain Buddhahood. The worldly benefits come naturally, as part of what Amitabha compassionately offers us.

       When we truly grasp this, something shifts. A quiet joy arises—not the fleeting pleasure of getting what we desire in this world, but something deeper. It is the joy and peace that come from certainty. Even though we remain ordinary beings with many afflictions, we know that our rebirth in the Pure Land and attainment of Buddhahood are assured.

       The sutras say that this joy surpasses even the bliss of deep meditative absorption.

       So now we understand why the Name of Amitabha is called supreme among all Buddhas, all teachings, all mantras, and all merits.

       No teaching is higher than “Namo Amituofo.” No mantra is more powerful. No merit is greater.

       When we recite this one Name with a focused heart, we are honoring all Buddhas, embracing all mantras, and practicing all Dharma paths at once. The eighty-four thousand Dharma doors are all contained within this single Name.

       Reciting Amitabha’s Name assures our rebirth in the Pure Land—and brings us joy and peace right here, right now.
