Amitabha’s Name and Amitabha are One

Names as Essence and Names as Labels

Everything in the world - people, places, objects - has a name. But not all names function the same way. Some names are inseparable from the essence they represent. The names and mantras of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas belong to this category. They are not just words - they embody the presence, wisdom, and compassion of these enlightened beings. These are “names as essence.”

By contrast, some names are merely labels that refer to things without carrying their essence. Saying “water” doesn’t quench your thirst. Calling someone’s name doesn’t bring them to you unless they can hear it. These names lack the power of direct connection. These are “names as labels.”

Amitabha’s Name: The Name of Essence

Amitabha’s name, the Great Name of a Myriad Virtues, is a perfect example of the “name as essence.” It embodies his very being - his virtues and his light. Master Shandao described it as the "Name of Light." When we recite “Namo Amitabha Buddha,” we don’t just say a name - we form a direct bond with his essence.

Amitabha made reciting his name the very means of deliverance in his Fundamental Vow. The moment his name is called he manifests.

When we say his name, we align with his vows, are intimate with him, and are being embraced by his light.

Connecting With Amitabha through His Name

Many of us long to be close to Amitabha Buddha. But how can we, as ordinary beings, do that? The answer is simple - by reciting his name.

We don’t need to understand his profound wisdom or visualize his perfect form. We don’t have to grasp his supernatural power or contemplate his deep compassion. All of this is fully encompassed within his name.

The Profound Simplicity of Amitabha-recitation

The beauty of the practice of Amitabha-recitation is its simplicity. We don’t need to pursue other practices such as reciting the names of other Buddhas or Bodhisattvas, chanting mantras or studying sutras, performing repentance rituals or engaging in meditation. All we need to do is recite his name.

By simply reciting "Namo Amitabha Buddha," we align ourselves with his vows, are embraced by his infinite light, and are never forsaken by him.
